Collagen
Collagen is an extra cellular fibrillar protein present in all the body's organs and tissues. It provides the matrix that sustains the body's structure. The most abundant protein, collagen comprises nearly 30% of total protein or 6% of corporal weight. Collagen comprises almost 75% of our skin. Collagen controls cell shape. Collagen fibers are woven together like threads in fabric. This provides the framework onto which new cells can adhere grow. In the skin, collagen provides texture, resiliency, and shape.
Between ages 20 to 30, collagen production slows dramatically. By the time a person reaches age 60, the production of collagen has decreased more than 35%.
The signs of collagen loss are unmistakable:
- Wrinkles appear and become deeper.
- Elasticity decreases.
- Stretch marks appear and intensify.
Collagen's main function is to sustain organs such as tendons, skin and cartilage. It provides integrity, firmness and elasticity to the organ structures. The greater the amount of collagen the body has available, the more shapely and flexible the body will be. It helps distribute fluids through blood vessels and glandular conducts.
